I automatically assess exits and escape routes whenever I enter a new room

Automatic environmental scanning is heightened in people with anxiety or anyone who has experienced or studied threat situations. Soldiers, police, and people with PTSD do it reflexively, but a significant minority of the general population develop this habit from general hypervigilance — a low-level threat-readiness that never fully switches off.
