Bananas are naturally radioactive — and so are you
🤷 This changes nothingFact Battle
Bananas contain potassium-40, a naturally radioactive isotope of potassium. The radiation dose from eating one banana is called a 'Banana Equivalent Dose' — a real unit used by physicists. The human body itself is radioactive for the same reason: it contains potassium-40 in every cell. Sleeping next to another person increases your annual radiation exposure slightly. This is completely harmless — background radiation is all around us.
Why this is surprising
Most people associate radioactivity with nuclear disasters and danger, not with fruit and their own bodies.
