Humans share approximately 50% of their DNA with bananas
Roughly 50% of human DNA is identical to a banana's DNA. This is because both share common ancestral genes that have been conserved across billions of years of evolution — particularly genes that control basic cellular functions like energy production and cell division. Humans share about 60% with fruit flies, 85% with mice, and 98.7% with chimpanzees. The closer the evolutionary relationship, the more DNA is shared.
Intuitively, a banana and a human seem to have nothing in common. Discovering that half our genetic code overlaps makes DNA feel less like a blueprint for appearance and more like a universal language of life.
